6 Reasons Why We’re Standing Up for Our Health.
The modern workplace is introducing height adjustable desks to combat
our sedentary office lifestyle, and improve our general health and well-being.
Recent studies by Monash University and the University of Western
Australia have proven that sitting for long periods of time can be detrimental
to our overall long-term and short-term health, and can negatively impact our
work performance.
At Slimline Warehouse, all our employees have access to Sit Stand Desks,
and from where I am standing (I am actually standing at my height adjustable
desk while I am writing this), a few of my colleagues are also spending their
Tuesday afternoon standing at their desk. So here are our top 6 reasons for why we
are standing up for our health:
1. Increased Energy Levels
Increased
blood flow through our body produces more endorphins and energy. Sitting down
(especially if you cross your legs like I sometimes do) reduces our blood
circulation, which can result in in tired, weak muscles, and low energy levels.
The commonly
experienced 3:30-itis doesn't have to be treated with more coffee anymore: instead,
stand up, stretch out, and adjust your Sit Stand Desk height.
2. Better Mood & Workday Interactions
As mentioned
earlier, standing increases blood circulation, which increases endorphins. Having
a surplus of endorphins helps improve our stress levels, work-related anxiety,
and our mood.
When we are
feeling relaxed and happy at work, we are more likely to have better
interactions with co-workers, and let little things that come up during the day
affect us less.
3. Increased Productivity
Do you sometimes feel stuck in a rut or inspired? Switching between
sitting and standing postures can help our creativity flow. A slightly different work environment can do
wonders for our perspective and concentration. And if you’re worried about your typing or
reading being affected, don’t be. There is little to no difference with
performing these tasks sitting or standing. Try it!
4. Relieve Muscle Pain and Improve Posture.
As you read this, how is your posture? Think about the last time you sat
with good posture today.
When we sit for long periods of time, we adjust our position when we’re
uncomfortable, which leads to slouching and sitting improperly. This poor
posture can lead to a number of issues, including a strained neck, sore
shoulders, a stiff neck, inflexible
spine and herniated disks. Standing during the day naturally improves our core
muscles & stabilisers, which help strengthen your back and body.
5. Weight Gain Management
The obesity
rate in Australia is increasing rapidly due to lack of exercise, poor diet, and
prolonged sitting and staying still. By standing up, we are using more muscles
and energy, which can help to manage weight gain and fluctuating weight.
A study conducted
by the BBC &
University of Chester, showed that standing can help you lose approximately
3.6kg per year when standing for 3 or more hours a day for your standard 5 day
work week. Who needs soup diets, right?
6. Reduce Risk of Chronic Disease
There are a number of
chronic diseases that can occur with a sedentary lifestyle. High blood pressure
and heart disease are linked to long sitting times, with fatty acids clogging
the heart. When our muscles are idle, our pancreas produces more insulin. An
excess of insulin in our system can lead to diabetes. Multiple studies have
shown that even with regular exercise, if continue to sit for at least 6 hours
a day, we are more likely to have health complications.
Introducing
a Sit Stand Desk into your office space is easier than you think. With a huge
range of desks available, you can even turn your tiny office cube into a health
hub.
