Most of us have come to understand the negative side effects that can arise from an inactive work environment.  Sitting for long periods of time can lead to many health issues including physical and mental stress.

You should never overlook the health of your employees for any length of time.  It doesn't matter if you have a large or small company, you are putting your workers in harm's way.  Their physical and mental health can have a major impact on their productivity and performance.

Most people understand the importance of exercise but only consider the physical rewards.  Scientists have compiled important evidence that the lack of physical exercise also affects the way you think.  Your brain benefits significantly from exercise including:

• Improved memory
• Higher levels of concentration
• Ability to learn at a faster pace
• Increase mental stamina
• Higher levels of creativity
• Reduce the level of stress

Exercise has also shown to increase your employee's mood which is critical for their workplace productivity.  Here are some excellent and inexpensive ideas for improving your employees' overall health:

Sit-Stand Desks:

These desks do not take up any more space than the desks you now have in place.  They are relatively inexpensive and are the perfect solution for your employees to choose when they need to stand while still performing their jobs.

Standing Mats:

Whether your employees stand all day or only occasionally, using standing mats will considerably reduce foot and leg fatigue as well as muscle tension.  Standing mats also support feet and will improve your posture so your employees can stand all day, or other periods of time, comfortably.

Stability Balls:

Stability balls are excellent replacements for office chairs.  They are the perfect solution for increased spinal stabilisation and core strength, along with coordination and balance throughout the workday.

Walking:

You should encourage walking in the workplace and even during meetings.  This allows your employees to maintain physical activity during the workday which will greatly improve their health and reduce the number of sick days. Walking improves circulation and increases their heart rate which increases their energy and endorphin levels.

Create an Exercise Area:

Having an exercise area or a specific room for your employees perform simple exercises and stretches will improve their overall health and well being.  Incorporate some Yoga mats, weights, and other equipment for employees to use more often.

Have Exercise Classes:

You might consider bringing in a Yoga or exercise instructor for classes that will take place during their lunchtime and everyone is welcome to join in.

Simply by incorporating some of these suggestions into your workplace, you will be contributing to their well being and show your workers that you sincerely care about them
